This post takes you on a snorkel with sea lions as they play-fight with each other, then shows you baby sea lions as they play-hunt, crunching on little crabs and catching bit of kelp like they're like fish.
This was a solo snorkel off La Jolla Cove. I’ve found that snorkeling alone is much more animal-friendly, as the sea lions don’t seem to perceive a single snorkeler to be as much of a threat as a group.
Notice at 1:03 how I’ve just discovered an interesting school of both Garibaldi and kelp bass and I’m trying to figure out what’s drawing them all there when I look over to see a sea lion just lurking in the depths watching me. When I turn my camera to her she comes up curiously and then swims away.
Also notice the babies in the second half of the video. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them forage in the sand so much for little treats to chew on! They also love grabbing bits of kelp and attacking them like they’re fish. They have so much in common with cats and dogs in their love of play.
Enjoy, and thanks for visiting. xx
